What is Carotid Triplex and how does it help us?
The carotid triplex exams the degree of thickening of the vessel wall, the existence and extent of atherosclerotic plaques.
These plaques, consisting of fat, cholesterol, calcium and other substances in the blood, are piling up on the walls of the arteries and as they increase in size, they reduce the width of the vessels causing carotid artery disease.
In the event of a significant reduction of the width of carotids, the blood flow through the artery can slow or stop completely, reducing blood flow to the brain and causing neurological symptoms.
Through this exam we accurately calculate the degree of carotid stenosis, thus enabling the treating physician to recommend appropriate treatment.
